The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) created the “Gallery of Conscience” (GoC) in order to focus museum resources on the lives and struggles of folk artists around the world, in addition to their traditional focus on the work produced by these artists. In 2012, the GoC was re-envisioned as a prototype space in which staff, museum visitors, local communities, and a diversity of international folk artists could come together, explore themes critical to the lives of folk artists, and iteratively design and install public exhibitions that responded to critique and dialogue, and changed over time. The first installation in this new space focused on HIV/AIDS.
